What is a flat back in a yoga class?

Let me start by saying I have been practicing yoga for 23 years, which seems crazy to say. I can’t be that old already. I’ve been teaching yoga for 16 years and my favorite people to teach are beginners.

The other day I got to work with someone who was trying yoga out for the first time and it was a treat.

Every time I work with a beginner to yoga it reminds me of how:

  • nothing happens overnight

  • with a little bit of daily effort anything is possible

  • beginnings are scary

  • it takes courage to show up to new experiences

  • the body is a foreign place, at first

  • befriending our bodies is something most of us have to learn

  • the body is dense

  • the body tells a story of where we’ve been and what we’ve been through

I feel honored to be at the beginning of what feels like an epic journey into befriending the body.

I love beginners and beginning yoga so much that I tend to stick to the basics in yoga. There is much to be learned from foundational poses and not all bodies benefit from the more fancy looking poses.

One of the foundational yoga poses I teach the most, is coming into a flat back.

This video below was inspired by all the beginners I’ve taught who look around the room confused when I say, “Inhale, flat back.”

If you’re new to the the practice of yoga I’m here to help.

Tell me what poses feel challenging to you and I’ll break down some basics to help you feel better in your body.

If you’re someone interested in starting out, but aren’t sure where to start, start here. This is a program I created to help people manage and relieve head and neck pain and to befriend their body. It’s great program for beginners and for people struggling to get out neck pain.

Love Always,
